2 Nashville startups compete for $1M prize in Global Food and Health Innovation Challenge

Two Nashville startup companies, InvisionHeart and Utilize Health, are finalists for the Global Food and Health Innovation Challenge and will compete next week for the $1 million prize.

The challenge is part of the second annual Global South Summit, a forum in Nashville that brings together executives and experts from around the world to concentrate on food and health issues. It is put together by theCumberlandCenter, a research and business partnership that seeks to address food and health needs locally and internationally through innovation.

InvisionHeart, which allows hospitals and clinics to access cardiac data through a mobile device, and Utilize Health, which connects patients with neurological disabilities to therapies and facilities with the greatest capabilities to help them, were chosen from among 220 submissions from nine countries. As a part of the Global South Summit, they will be among six teams presenting before a panel on Monday, and the winner will be announced on Tuesday.

“To be onstage at the Global South Summit with all the attendees who are coming to this thing just gives them visibility they’d never have on their own,” said Michael Burcham, CEO of the Entrepreneur Center.

Burcham, who helped orchestrate the selection process, said the goal was to identify companies that could make the broadest impact in health or access to food. He said the decisions were based on the companies’ management team quality, business model, potential market and momentum. READ MORE
