An Intern Experience | Taylor Huestis

Top 5 Intern Takeaways
1) There is personal satisfaction to doing a job the right way and doing it well.
This something that I learned quickly this summer at the EC, as this was my first real experience at a job ( I have previously been an Orientation Assistant at Ole Miss and the Recruitment Chair for my fraternity). I learned that when you’re given an important task and you finish it quickly and efficiently, the praise and recognition you get from your hard work is indescribably gratifying.
2) 3 Months as an Intern taught me more than 3 years in college
Being thrown headfirst into real world situations is more meaningful than just a pass/fail grade and will teach you infinitely more than sitting in a lecture “learning” about the theories or principles of something.
3) Keep a cool head
Like Barry said in his blog post, keeping a cool head is very important. Sometimes the work will just start piling up and with mountains of work, comes mountains of stress. Succumbing to that stress will sink you, so do what you need to do to de-stress, whether that may be walking to Pinewood Social to grab a quick beer or just taking a lap around the EC to decompress for a second and get your mind straight.
4) You never know who you’ll meet
In my opinion, this is something that rings especially true at the EC. The list of people that I was able to meet this summer was astounding. I met Steve Case, Joe Galante, Ken Levitan , David Furse, and obviously Michael Burcham, the list goes on and on.
5) Work doesn’t have to be boring it can be fun
This is the most important lesson I learned all summer. I had envisioned that the working world would be me in a cubicle typing up reports or something along those lines. At the EC, everyday was exciting and different; I had little to no idea what I would be doing that day, or who I would be interacting with.
If you’re in the right work environment it can start to feel like a family, and I’m proud to say that I felt like the people in the EC are family now. I was able to make new friends with not only the other interns and staff members, but with all of the entrepreneurs who are working out of the EC. This is by far the most important thing that I took away from my time at the EC.
